I AM photoblogger
27 03 2009Hi friends,
I have uploaded dozens of pictures that I have taken in the last six weeks of so, particularily mind-blowing are those from the carnival here in stuttgart called Fashing and also thedance images of the young men who are playing the chorus in the show I am working on, “Wut”. I hope you enjoy, the pages can be a little slow to load so I would suggest clicking “Archive” and then picking a category that interests you. The photoblog lives here www.theatrelocal.org

In Germany- Making theatre
15 02 2009
The Goethe-Institut in partnership with the International Theatre Institute have awarded me an international residency at the Staatstheater Stuttgart in Germany for three months. Stuttgart, is Germany’s third largest city and lies in the south west . I’ll have the chance to work on a production from mid February till it opens mid April and then travel to see theatre in other cities too. I’ll be assisting on a show called “Wut” (Rage) which is based on a 2006 film . The director is also the theatre’s Principal Director in Residence Volker Lösch who (I recently discovered) has gotten himself into some fantastic political trouble in the past few years with his artistic choices involving choruses, I am thrilled to be continuing to develop my practice of working with spoken choruses and to really be able to ask the question “What would Thespis do?”
I’m going to do a photoblog, will post the link in a few weeks.

29 09 2008
SMASH! drops Stuff on Saturday Oct 4 7PM to 7AM at 61 Atlantic Ave.
If you’re coming out for NUIT BLANCHE this year be sure to make a stop at SMASH: Droppin Stuff in Zone C. Katherine Sanders’ moving celebration of violent destruction complete with crane and bullseye will be a sight to behold. More info can be found by clicking here or on the Nuit Blanche website. Look for me lurking amongst the other Custodians of Destruction with either sledgehammer or quill in hand.

Great review of Singhski!
12 08 2008We got the following fab review by Evan Webber on Chris Dupuis’s theatre blog, Time and Space:
“The territory of hope gets driven over by a sparkler-mounted electric monster-truck in Singhski, part of the Performance Gallery series at the Gladstone. In just under ten minutes, Rebecca Singh and Chad Dembski simply, effortlessly, even childishly show us how ‘Things used to be better’, while nimbly keeping themselves clear of the black hole of nostalgia. In doing so, they manage to renew our faith in the power of strangeness. It’s hard to say what you’ll find when you go, because the set-list of their performance (which is likely to include ‘internet poetry’ and Sun-Ra-inspired costumage) is mutable. Though it’s sure to stay essentially, refreshingly, weird.”

Upcoming
4 06 2008I am about to head off to Italy for a wee vacation where I will among other things check out La Pieta. I am excited to see it as I am collaborating with writer and performer David Bateman on a new piece inspired by the lovely Mary and her giant Jesus.
This summer also means writing. I have been working on a new play that tackles the subject of accents (or lack thereof) on our stages. Many thanks to the Ontario Arts Council and Cahoots Theatre projects for making this possible.
What would life be like with a reasonable load of projects right? the list continues…
Melissa Morris (Evil Dead the Musical) and I are basking in orchestral glow as we develop a show celebrating the amazing creature that is THE CONDUCTOR. More about that later…
In September I look forward to another crazy night performing at Nuit Blanche where I will under the cover of darkness become a Custodian of Destruction for Katherine Sanders’ event SMASH! DROPPIN’ STUFF. October 4, 2008 -stay tuned.
Otherwise life has been all about editing sound and video for a few short films in the pipeline. I like it, I like editing, props to Apple for making software that lets you master your own universe! My two new shorts NUCLEAR WINTER (featuring a beautiful poem by Diane Ackerman) and UN POETE will be screened sometime this summer.
Go art go!

Spoken Words!
14 04 2008I have the amazing fortune of getting to spend two weeks as a resident artist as part of the inaugural Banff Centre for the Arts Spoken Word Program. The incredible Sheri-D Wilson pulled together 15 of Canada’s most exciting spoken word talent and along with our amazing “peer mentors” Ian Ferrier, D. Kimm, and Bob Holman we performed our poems as a part of the 2008 Calgary International Spoken Word Festival. I performed two new poems MAIDEN SONG and OLYMPIA CAN NOT BURN.
